INTERVIEW WITH @MARKSALKE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY

I had the opportunity to ask a few questions to Mark Salke about social media and the benefits of having an intern. Mark is Co-founder, Blogger, and co-moderator at #SMXChat: https://smxchat.wordpress.com/

Here is the transcript from that interview:

Why should a company hire a social media intern?

Well first, a company should have a social media plan, then they can consider hiring an intern as a resource to assist in executing said plan. So in the case where a company has a plan for managing their social media presence, interns can:

  • Bring new academic insights and focus to the social media plan

  • Create energy and passion for social media in the company

  • Energetically and enthusiastically promote the company’s social media presence

What is one of the most highly valued skills a social media intern can have?

Anyone representing a company on social media must first be a learner. What I mean by this is that, as the social media ‘voice’ of the company, an intern must learn quickly about the company’s history, products and services, culture, and vision and be ready to articulate the company’s message.”

How can an intern remain up to date on social media trends?

1) Attend social media conferences

2) Attend Twitter Chats

3) Join professional groups, like LinkedIn Groups, that are relevant to social trends

What qualifies as engaging content versus spammy posts?

Spam is in the eye of the beholder. One person’s spam is another’s valuable information. I’mnot condoning mindless spamming, but I make the point that, as citizen’s of social media communities, we must have some tolerance for the insensitivity, and perhaps ignorance, of others. This said, suffice to say that if you’re recklessly posting singular messages, ‘mentioning’ large groups, and not really interacting or ‘engaging’ with the recipients of your message(s), you’re spamming.

Engaging content is information-oriented messaging that has a stated and understandable purpose, is contextual, timely and welcome, either as people engage with it in platform streams or as they opt-in to receive it from your organization.

How can social media interns appeal to other millennials and startup CEOs?

People are impressed by others that do things. Be bold in getting involved. Stretch yourself to enhance your skills. And be humble. Allow your deeds to be your voice.
